I am delighted to share my experience working with author Tom Roberts with Raven Design and Consulting. The stars aligned in 2022 with my introduction to Tom at Pensacola’s signature Gulf Coast Arts Festival. The chance encounter came mid-way through my research and writing of a manuscript that was published on Jan 7, 2025, as The Westcott Story: The Enduring Spirit of an American Family Spanning 400 Years. I spoke with Tom about my project as he showcased books written by himself and fellow local authors under the “Emerald Coast Writers” tent. Tom handed me his business card and encouraged me to call him if I needed help.

Two years later, I tracked down Tom’s card and asked for his help. Having exhausted efforts to garner interest by a publishing house, I opted to “go it alone” with self-publication. Where to begin? The providential call I made to Tom defined both the beginning and end of what amounted to a four- to five-month sprint.

With his quiet demeanor and genuine interest in helping novice authors succeed, Tom guided me with a wealth of technical and publication knowledge. Drawing from his own experience as an author and a career in information technology, Tom skillfully guided me through each phase before reality set in with a published book in hand. He recommended the company I ended up using to lay out my manuscript and design the book covers, as needed suggesting what I should ask of them to ensure my needs were met. He schooled me on ISBNs, barcodes, QR codes, KDP Amazon, IngramSpark, website development, email marketing platforms, media kits, and so much more. Tom resolved the many technical issues I encountered throughout the publication and website development life cycles, and he offered moral support when I most needed it to overcome challenges that naturally arise when tackling a project of this scope.

The relationship was give-and-take. Tom took my direction on all matters, including standing up a website using the WIX platform, and he weighed in with recommendations that served me quite well.
